Lyrics aren't just words in a song. [Discussion 5]

Please read "THE LAW" (especially the section named PARTICIPATION) carefully before participating in this discussion.

Pinko! :P

In his hugely popular composition Common Orange Jasmine, Taiwanese lyricist Vincent Fang penned memorable similes such as "My lingering thoughts pile up like fallen leaves in the courtyard" and "The butterfly on the window sill is like the elegant stanza fluttering about".

Publish some lyrics (a stanza or two) of an English song that you find particularly memorable, and comment on how the lyricist has made it so (the literary devices s/he used and so on). Remember to indicate the title and singer of the song!

Common Jasmine Orange

"Beyond the window is a sparrow chirping noisily while perched on a power line"
You have told me that the above sentence bears a lot of that (special) summer feeling
The pencil in my hand moves back and forth across the piece of paper
In a few lines I describe who you are to me
The taste of saury, both the cat and you seek to understand
The scent of first love was rediscovered by us just like that
The warmth of sunlight is like brilliant, freshly-picked strawberries
You have said you cannot bear to monopolise this kind of feeling

Rain falls through the night; my love pours forth just like rainwater
My lingering thoughts pile up like fallen leaves in the courtyard
A few words of contempt and malice are unable to cool my feelings for you
You appear in every page of my poem

Rain falls through the night; my love pours forth just like rainwater
The butterfly on the window sill is like the elegant stanza fluttering about
I continue to write about my eternal love; this love concludes my poem
You are the only one I wish to understand

The full ear of rice has made this season a happy one
And your visage is like the ripened tomatoes in the fields
Suddenly you say to me, "The name Orange Jasmine is very beautiful"
At this moment I can only think of kissing your stubborn lips

Lyrics by Vincent Fang Wenshan

misteryeo's 5-STAR-10-WORD REVIEW [February 2006]

A feast not just for FANatics. Available for browsing @Borders.

Yup, that's my 5-STAR-10-WORD REVIEW of Gorillaz's Rise of the Orge:

Gorillaz: Rise of the Ogre

How do you write a fake biography of a fake band? With style, writer and Gorillaz touring drummer Browne and comic book illustrator Jamie Hewlett, along with the design collective Zombie Fresh Eaters, answer back lustily. Gorillaz are a music/art hybrid masterminded by Hewlett and Blur frontman Damon Albarn, a veritable cartoon supergroup made up of mountainous B-boy Russel Hobbs, Japanese girl guitarist Noodle, metal-worshipping bassist Murdoc, and hollow-eyed, angular vocalist 2D. They are a genuine pop sensation, with millions of albums of dub/hip-hop/punk sold and concerts mixing animation and live musicians. Rise covers all that but from the "perspective" of the band, with the human creators cast as bit players and the focus squarely on the rise, fall, and rise of four scrappy toonz. The book is equal parts graphic novel, design catalog, and spoof of Steven Davis's Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga, characteristics that easily make it the best-in-the-moment biography of snobs, and devotees of great British art pranks alike will devour it whole. Recommended for libraries of all stripes.

Yet another cover...

"Warner Bros. sent Kloves a list of novels that the company was considering to adapt as films. It included the first Harry Potter novel, which intrigued him despite his usual indifference to these catalogs. He went on to write the screenplays for the first four films in the blockbuster series. After finishing the fourth adaptation, Kloves left to pursue his own project and currently is directing and writing The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, which is due for release in 2007. Harry Potter producer David Heyman revealed in an October 2005 press conference that Kloves would be returning to adapt Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince — the sixth in the series."

If you were Steve, which actors and actresses would you cast as Christopher Boone, Ed Boone, Siobhan and Eileen Shears? Explain your choices.

misteryeo's 5-STAR-10-WORD REVIEW [January 2006]

Goscinny's more than Asterix. Predictable at times, but good fun!

Yup, that's my 5-STAR-10-WORD REVIEW of Nicholas by René Goscinny & Jean-Jacques Sempé:

Nicholas

This classic book about a mischievous schoolboy and his friends, originally published in French in 1959, is now available in English. The expertly translated text is enlivened by artwork by a New Yorker cartoonist to create the unforgettable milieu of Nicholas and his rowdy friends. A collection of 19 escapades, the stories introduce the protagonist and his cohorts as they wreak havoc out of simple, everyday situations at school, on the playground, and at home. Pestering the substitute teacher, trying to adopt a lost dog, and quarreling over soccer positions (only to find there isn't even a ball) make for hilarious and timeless anecdotes that will have readers giggling. Adults will also appreciate Nicholas's childlike perception of each troublesome situation through his comments at the end of each adventure. These charming vignettes beg to be shared aloud in a classroom or library setting. A delightful choice for spicing up middle-grade collections and for exposing kids to stories from abroad.
